Interesting post.

The underlying thought is very try. Myself, I tend to get a lot of conceptual 'work' done during my morning shower.

But it's the hours I spend fleshing out those jolts of inspiration that show up on clients' billings. I see the fact that I think about life, design and everything on my off hours as part of my value as a designer, and that effort reflected in my hourly rate.

Thanks for commenting eendtje,

There is a great post “7 Reasons You Shouldn’t Charge by the Hour” on Mirificam Press at http://mirificampress.com/permalink/7_reasons_you_shouldnt_charge_by_the... you might find interesting/valuable.

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff.

What I usually do is give a quote based on the expected hours and then mostly treat that like a fixed price for the work.

This makes it clear for clients what the price is based on, and assures me of a minimum fee. If the work gets out of hand for some mutually unforeseen reason, it also gives a good basis to talk about price-adjustments (e.g. "Due to the fact that we decided to switch to concept X last week, this item on my quote took me twice as long, so can we agree on X more hours?)

I have a rather casual way of working with clients (and I have the 'luxury' of not having a bucket-load of them at the same time yet), and this approach seems to work well for me.

eendtje,

There have been a lot of new comments on the subject (42) at the original post. Worth checking out the different points of view.
